I was 21 and living in London when my husband
bought Bilbo for me.
My dreams had been realised - I
was getting my very own Great Dane and a Harlequin. Well if
you want to be pickie about it, a mismark but he was the
most beautiful dog in the whole world to me.
I
collected him in a wicker shopping basket and although I
worked, he was able to come to the office with me.
I
had the most wonderful 7 years possible with this boy, he
and I were inseparable and in those days one could take
their dog into shops and just about anywhere that you
wanted too and I did.
I moved back to Maldon and we spent many
happy times down the promenade, all off-lead, though there was the odd
occasion
when the radar failed and he would knock
someone over, but he was so people friendly
that no-one ever made a fuss.

He was excellent with
Jonty often beating me up the stairs to check on him in the
cot, a natural "nanny".
Such a lovely fellow,
absolutely everyone loved him and many called to take him
out for a walk.
I am not going to write pages about my
memories of Bilbo, he was a very precious companion and we
experienced many things together, I lost him under
anaesthetic at the age of seven, totally devastated and
heartbroken, I couldn't replace him then or now and it took
me 10 years before I could even consider getting my second
Dane, Cartier.
